The Sentient Knowledge Map (SKM)
The HELLO Community includes many stand-alone resources and articles about specific aspects of higher education management. But institutions are complex systems—so we also needed a way to share structure and relationships: how units, processes, roles, and resources connect in an institutional context.
To support this, we developed the Sentient Knowledge Map (SKM).
The SKM is a community-developed, Creative Commons–licensed, visually intuitive relational database built using a conceptual mapping approach. It is designed to show how institutional elements interconnect across an institution.

How to explore the SKM
You can view the SKM online in any modern web browser. For the best experience, we recommend using TheBrain software (the tool used to create the map), which provides a more powerful and flexible interface.
- Download TheBrain (free).
- After installing, download an editable version of the SKM.
- Explore the map in depth—or extend it to fit your local context.
