Sentient Knowledge Maps (SKMs) offer a rich, practical way to share curated, complex information about an institution. You can share an SKM in two ways:

- Share the entire map by creating a complete backup called a Brain Archive File.
- Share a subset by copying selected content from one SKM into another SKM, then backing up that receiving SKM for distribution.
Both approaches preserve:
- Thought hierarchy
- Links and relationships
- Metadata (including tags and types)
- Notes and attachments
Share an entire SKM
You must use the TheBrain desktop client to export content; the browser-based interface does not support exporting. Download the free client here: https://thebrain.com/download.
- Open the SKM you want to share in TheBrain.
- From the File menu, select Backup to Brain Archive.
- Select the option Allow anyone to restore from the exported file.
- Choose a save location for the archive and note where you saved it.
Share a subset of an SKM
- In your existing Brain, select the thoughts you want to share.
Demo: https://www.thebrain.com/support/tutorials#selecting-multiple-thoughts
- Hold Ctrl (Windows) or Command (Mac) and click to select multiple thoughts, or
- Click and drag to select a group.
- Right-click the selection and choose Copy Thoughts. If needed, include descendants to preserve the full subtree.
- Paste the thoughts into one of the following:
- An existing Brain (select the parent thought first, then paste), or
- A new Brain to create a standalone Brain that contains only the shared section.
- Create a Brain Archive File for the Brain that now contains your selected content (follow the steps in Share an entire SKM above).
