I hope to improve my skills as an academic leader and learn new approaches to effective leadership and management of higher education. In addition, I am looking forward to learning more about the mentoring process.

I derive great personal satisfaction from helping others grow. It was my primary motivation in becoming a faculty member and has carried forward into my administrative responsibilities. My first administrative role was directing the center for teaching and learning, which expanded into roles in organizational development and growth of my administrative team. I also love to learn from others.

My role as an academic leader is to create a strong vision of the education we want to provide for our students by distilling existing institutional culture and mixing it with innovative ideas and best practices from other institutions; to forge consensus and create a sense of joint purpose for the faculty, staff and students and to apply innovative approaches and problem solving skills to achieve our mutual goals.

I have a very collaborative leadership style. I believe in the power of positive feedback and subscribe to the management philosophy of catching people doing well and rewarding them appropriately. My management approach is open on a number of levels. I have an open door access policy. My budgeting process is open and available to all faculty and staff. I encourage open and honest discussion and questioning in all meetings and will either respond honestly or if unable to divulge information will explain why.

I believe in mentoring faculty and staff for success and career growth and a number of my former staff members now lead technology and teaching development units at other universities.
