SUMMARY:Global Citizenship for Campus\, Community\, and Careers
DESCRIPTION:The conference will focus on key questions about global learning\, community engagement\, and inclusive excellence:\n-How are institutions moving from strategic planning for internationalization and global learning to offering inclusive global learning experiences for all students across disciplines\, majors\, and a range of community-based practices? -What promising practices have taken institutions from ideas to implementation? What structures can be created or removed to ensure equitable participation?\n-How are institutions creating and implementing interdisciplinary opportunities for meaningful global learning experiences where students can develop and apply professional and civic skills over time? How are faculty encouraged and supported to create new opportunities for collaboration across disciplinary boundaries and institutional silos? What are approaches for connecting community-based experiences within professional programs with those in the liberal arts to foster greater collaboration and alignment of resources across campus?\n-What role does the curriculum play in promoting global learning in a world that is grappling with the rise of nationalism and populism? How does this play out differently in different countries? How should the curriculum encourage fluency in languages other than English and how does embracing multilingualism change the curriculum?\n-How are immigrant (including undocumented) and international students affirmatively included and engaged on campus and in our communities? How can we expand our capacity to support the success of these students and negate marginalization and exploitation?\nWhat are examples of powerful pedagogies that support global learning across the curriculum and cocurriculum? –How are connections made across programs\, units\, and departments to emphasize social justice\, sustainability\, and intercultural engagement to advance student global learning skills and collaborate with educators engaged in complementary work?\n-How are institutions ensuring equitable access to global learning experiences across racial\, socioeconomic\, gender\, financial\, and other lines? How often are underrepresented groups of students brought into these experiences and encouraged to participate? What are models that work for all or many students?\n-How might the intersectionality of global learning\, service learning\, internships\, and other community-based high-impact practices (including ePortfolios) be leveraged to achieve greater impact and engagement to increase student success? What dimensions of these experiences should be considered essential for high-quality\, high-impact global learning? \nBookmark

SUMMARY:2019 Institute on Teaching and Learning for Campus-wide Interfaith Excellence
DESCRIPTION:The ever-increasing diversity of the United States means that we regularly encounter religious difference in our everyday lives. American citizens have a choice of how to respond to this unprecedented diversity and difference in our communities and nation. Rather than allowing apathy or intolerance to define the future of our democracy\, we can choose to engage each other to build bridges across lines of difference. American colleges and universities have a special role and responsibility to help our fellow citizens explore how to embrace our many differences while maintaining a common life together. Higher education brings people together across lines of religious difference through curricular\, co-curricular\, and community engagement opportunities. As such\, campuses serve as both a laboratory for how diverse societies can thrive\, as well as a launching pad for the next generation of leaders who can transform experiences with diversity into engaged and productive pluralism. \nThe 2019 Institute on Teaching and Learning for Campus-wide Interfaith Excellence\, in tandem with AAC&U’s Institute on Integrative Learning and Signature Work\, will prepare college and university leaders to transform their campuses into model environments for interfaith cooperation. Informed by the Leadership Practices for Interfaith Excellence\, the Institute is an opportunity for campuses to develop context specific plans for integrating interfaith cooperation in sustainable and far-reaching ways in order to cultivate new generations of civic interfaith leaders. Over the course of this four-day Institute\, campus teams will meet with a faculty advisor\, attend sessions relevant to their campus project\, meet as a team to develop a context-specific action plan\, and consult with experts on pressing issues. \nThrough the generous support of the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations\, all costs will be covered for campus teams who attend the Institute. In addition\, each campus will be eligible for a $5\,000 grant to implement their action plan on campus. Campus teams will continue to receive guidance and mentorship from IFYC and AAC&U throughout the year. Representatives from each campus team will be asked to attend a gathering in spring 2020 to share and reflect on their interfaith action plans post-institute. \nBookmark

SUMMARY:Summit for Leaders in Advancement
DESCRIPTION:As the advancement landscape shifts\, it becomes increasingly imperative for senior leaders to make strategic decisions\, drive innovation and cultivate a culture of excellence. \nHigher-education students and faculty are often on the vanguard of social movements\, not least because college is often the first time people from different backgrounds are brought into contact in meaningful and sustained ways. As the United States reckons with the legacy of slavery and segregation and the ongoing reality of racial injustice\, Europe grapples with ever-growing waves of immigration from Africa and the Middle East\, people with cultures and religions vastly different from those of once homogenous European societies. In this context\, it is important that higher education advancement leaders deepen their understanding of race\, culture and inclusion and their capacity to engage in challenging conversations across human differences. \nEarly Bird* by May 31\, 2019\n$1\,575\, Member\n$2\,100\, Nonmember\nRegular Conference Rate\n$1\,675\, Member\n$2\,200\, Nonmember\n*Early bird ends May 31\, 2019. SUMMARY:2019 Institute on High-Impact Practices and Student Success
DESCRIPTION:The 2019 Institute on High-Impact Practices and Student Success will help campus and state system teams advance student success by making quality and equity the foundations for excellence in undergraduate education. Teams will work with Institute faculty to articulate guided learning pathways that serve as catalysts to deepen connections between the assets students bring to college\, their educational experiences\, and preparation for lifelong success.\nDrawing on evidence-based research that demonstrates a positive relationship between student participation in high-impact practices (HIPs) and improved student outcomes\, teams will define and develop curricular and cocurricular practices to support student engagement\, advance curricular coherence\, and generate equitable outcomes. Utilizing AAC&U’s Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education (VALUE) rubrics as well as the newly established VALUE Institute\, participating teams will define and/or strengthen processes for directly assessing student achievement of learning outcomes as a result of participation in high-impact practices. These processes will help campus and system-level teams set and monitor progress towards equity goals to improve educational outcomes for all students.\nCampuses will examine efforts to implement educational change and bring effective practices to scale in a time of limited resources. The Institute program addresses ambitious goals for improving both completion rates and the quality of student learning\, and it is highly relevant for institutions at various stages of work. \nBookmark

SUMMARY:Webinar - The Confounding Promise of “Community” in Divisive Times and Why It Matters More Than Ever for Student Success
DESCRIPTION:Community is at the heart of every institution in American higher education. It is uniquely embedded within mission statements under labels of citizenship\, leadership\, stewardship\, and social entrepreneurship. Community is also at the root of a liberal education; the liberation of an individual’s mind is best achieved in learning from others\, from locating oneself in a larger context\, and through applying learning to real-world issues that affect local\, national\, and global communities. Though\, in some ways the bedrock of American higher education\, the meaning of “community” has been altered significantly within the current political\, social\, environmental\, and technological climates. This demands new ways of thinking about how students experience community\, how they seek purpose and belonging on and off campus\, and how communities support students’ success. Connecting students’ community engagement with their success raises questions about how institutions can define community\, create pathways for engagement\, and communicate the essential nature of community-based practices for advancing inclusive excellence. This webinar takes on the meaning of community through varied lenses and institutional contexts\, each advocating in their own way that the promise of equity for each student is a function of the learning gained from individual reflection and from collective understanding. \nAAC&U will post details soon. \nBookmark

SUMMARY:ACE West Summer Summit
DESCRIPTION:ndisputable evidence shows that college graduates\, on average\, make more money\, and are happier\, healthier\, and more civically engaged than those who never completed a degree. Nevertheless\, it has become clear over the past several years that public skepticism about the value of higher education is on the rise. \nConcern about rising college costs\, student debt loads\, and workplace readiness has reignited long-standing debates about the role of higher education. This June\, ACE is gathering thought leaders and experienced campus leaders to decipher the necessary steps to affirm the long-term benefits of higher education to individuals and our wider society. \nJoin us at the ACE West Summer Summit in Portland\, Oregon. It is important for presidents\, provosts\, and other senior leaders to understand the current perceptions of higher education in order to consider how best to position their institutions to address them and meet the needs of current and future students. \nThis summit will provide an opportunity for leadership teams to: \n\nUnpack the public’s perception of higher education.\nAssess how those views apply to their own institutions.\nExplore ways to meet the needs of all students in a manner that truly demonstrates the value of higher education.\n\nWho should Participate: \nThis event is open to higher education leaders who are interested in unpacking public perceptions and positioning their institution for success. While individuals may attend\, we encourage institutions to send leadership teams who can actively engage during the summit and address their institutional needs. \nLeadership teams should consist of at least three individuals. We encourage a team composition based on the desired outcomes for the institution\, but suggest a representative mix of at least one senior leader and others who would advance institutional initiatives designed to meet the needs of students and advance institutional impact on the community (and society). Below are suggestions of individuals who may comprise a campus team. \nBookmark

SUMMARY:2019 AAUA Leadership Seminar
DESCRIPTION:The AAUA Annual Leadership Seminar comprises a limited number of American higher education professionals who are keenly interested in administrative practices. The number of seminar participants is limited to no more than 75; this limitation ensures opportunities for meaningful interaction between presenters and participants as well as among participants themselves. Many participants find the seminar as a place of meaningful professional networking and/or a place where scholarly collaborations are initiated. Perhaps most importantly\, the AAUA Leadership Seminar is intended and designed as an administrators’ professional development meeting where we “close the doors and talk about issues that we might not be willing to talk about in larger\, more open venues.” (Note: AAUA membership embraces personnel in all administrative roles and at all administrative levels\, from department chair/unit director through president. It enrolls personnel from all institutional types—two- and four-year colleges; comprehensive and research universities; publicly supported and privately supported institutions\, both non- and for-profit; and specialized career- and professional schools. Membership in AAUA is not required to participate in the leadership seminar.)\nThe 2019 seminar will be held at the Courtyard by Marriott Detroit Downtown Hotel (333 East Jefferson Avenue\, Detroit\, Michigan 48226). (Detailed lodging information can be found under the “Lodging” tab.)\nThe registration fee for the seminar is $200 – $300.
