SUMMARY:2019 POD Network Conference
DESCRIPTION:Registration Information\nFees:\n$520 early-bird (registration opens in July)\nHotel:\nWestin Convention Center ($189/night) & William Penn Omni ($189/night) \nLeaning on the theme of Connection: Closing the Distance\, we encourage proposals for this year’s conference that explore how human and digital connection can be intentionally leveraged by the educational development community to promote authentic connection in our ever-changing higher education landscape. The three prompts below are provided to guide the conference theme and promote two of the cross-cutting priorities from the POD Network Strategic Plan: diversity and inclusion\, and evidence-based practice. \n1.) Thinking about how educational developers can foster intentional connections and building community\, the following questions might be explored:\nHow can we enhance our relationships with faculty\, as well as among faculty?\nHow can we support intentional faculty and student relationships?\nHow can we encourage student to student interactions\, which foster meaningful relationships?\n2.) Thinking about education development that is inclusive and accessible to all\, the following questions might be explored:\nHow do we enhance and support connection through effective teaching and learning environments that are available to all students?\nHow can the digital learning environment be leveraged to enhance accessibility and student connection?\nHow can Centers’ programming promote intentionality in order to reverse the marginalization of historically underserved and underrepresented populations?\nHow can Centers’ partner and communicate with organizational stakeholders to leverage change regarding accessibility and inclusion?\n3.) Thinking about the rapidly changing educational landscape\, the following questions about educational development might be explored:\nHow do evidence-based practices relate to quality course design and the accomplishment of learning outcomes?\nHow can we guide the intentional integration of educational technology to support student connection within course design and curricular development?\nHow can we leverage the synergistic relationship between face-to-face and distance education pedagogies to support connections?\nPlease plan to join us to build connection while sharing your research and practices using various modes of presentation and engagement.\nPaul Gebb\, Conference Co-Chair\nAntonia Levy\, Conference Co-Chair\nClaudia Cornejo Happel\, Program Co-Chair\nGerman Vargas Ramos\, Program-Co-Chair\nHoag Holmgren\, POD Network Executive Directorow are changes in the educational landscapes affecting our Centers’ organizational structures? \n Bookmark

SUMMARY:New Models of the Master’s Degree
DESCRIPTION:Master’s education is central for many students and institutions\, but it also faces more competition than ever before. We will explore trends in master’s enrollment and consider whether the master’s has in fact become “the new bachelor’s.” Further\, the event will examine the kinds of master’s programs being created or expanded. And the program will include discussion of the way many new forms of higher education — online\, MOOC-inspired\, boot camps\, competency-based education and more — challenge the master’s degree. \nREGISTRATION\nEarly bird rate ends September 13\, 2019\n– HIGHER ED: $275 ($225 early bird)\n– CORPORATE: $350 ($250 early bird) \n2019 Leadership Series\nInside Higher Ed is bringing together an intimate gathering of leaders and influencers to discuss big issues facing higher education. Hosted at the Gallup World Headquarters in Washington\, DC\, these daylong events are an extension of thoughtful\, substantive and unflinching voice into a live convening of higher education leaders who share these values. Conversations will be led by editors Scott Jaschik and Doug Lederman.Bookmark

SUMMARY:Transforming STEM Higher Education
DESCRIPTION:Conference Overview\nSankofa\, a word in the Twi language of the Akan tribe of Ghana\, loosely translates to “looking back while going forward.” This year\, the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) will celebrate the thirty years of success that Project Kaleidoscope (PKAL) has had in providing effective professional and leadership development for STEM faculty. At the same time\, we anticipate the ten-year anniversary of PKAL’s affiliation with AAC&U in 2020. The union of AAC&U and PKAL as a voice and force for undergraduate STEM reform represents a bold organizational move toward ensuring that STEM disciplines remain central to what constitutes a quality undergraduate education. It also reveals the magnitude of what’s possible when diverse perspectives\, disciplines\, and worldviews are fully considered and brought to bear on organizational change.\nIt is in the spirit of such change that this conference calls upon STEM disciplinary faculty and education researchers to join us in charting a daring path for STEM higher education reform that is paved with social consciousness\, critical reflection\, introspection\, and disciplinary boundary crossing. Indeed\, if we are to heed the nation’s call for a competitively trained and diverse STEM workforce\, we must first be open in acknowledging that our unique disciplinary approaches to problem solving\, by themselves\, will not fully resolve our most perplexing challenges. Examination and investigation of undergraduate STEM education reform must not only extend across multiple institutional contexts\, but also be critical\, intelligent\, and patient\,[1] serving all student demographics and withstanding the influences of existing systems and structures of exclusion. Above all\, these efforts must be unceasing.\nTo that end\, the “Transforming STEM Higher Education” conference will question and examine the entire range of contemporary challenges to—and opportunities for—STEM higher education reform\, including exploring contemporary approaches to teaching\, broadening participation\, interrogating research studies\, and verifying assessment tools for determining effectiveness. In keeping with our commitment to STEM faculty\, we will also explore novel approaches to professional and leadership development. Conference attendees will be invited to unveil and abate disciplinary biases\, confront fixations on “fix the student” reform models\, and question theories about what can and cannot count as evidence of effectiveness.\nThrough this unique conference experience\, together we will continue our legacy of advancing the kind of undergraduate STEM education reform that brings diverse perspectives and worldviews to bear on levers of change. In doing so\, we will also guarantee our nation’s capacity to use those levers to drive innovation\, discovery\, social change\, and life choices. Ultimately\, we give deeper meaning and purpose to our way of knowing\, understanding\, and advancing STEM higher education practice\, research\, and policy.Bookmark

SUMMARY:Global Citizenship for Campus\, Community\, and Careers
DESCRIPTION:The conference will focus on key questions about global learning\, community engagement\, and inclusive excellence:\n-How are institutions moving from strategic planning for internationalization and global learning to offering inclusive global learning experiences for all students across disciplines\, majors\, and a range of community-based practices? -What promising practices have taken institutions from ideas to implementation? What structures can be created or removed to ensure equitable participation?\n-How are institutions creating and implementing interdisciplinary opportunities for meaningful global learning experiences where students can develop and apply professional and civic skills over time? How are faculty encouraged and supported to create new opportunities for collaboration across disciplinary boundaries and institutional silos? What are approaches for connecting community-based experiences within professional programs with those in the liberal arts to foster greater collaboration and alignment of resources across campus?\n-What role does the curriculum play in promoting global learning in a world that is grappling with the rise of nationalism and populism? How does this play out differently in different countries? How should the curriculum encourage fluency in languages other than English and how does embracing multilingualism change the curriculum?\n-How are immigrant (including undocumented) and international students affirmatively included and engaged on campus and in our communities? How can we expand our capacity to support the success of these students and negate marginalization and exploitation?\nWhat are examples of powerful pedagogies that support global learning across the curriculum and cocurriculum? –How are connections made across programs\, units\, and departments to emphasize social justice\, sustainability\, and intercultural engagement to advance student global learning skills and collaborate with educators engaged in complementary work?\n-How are institutions ensuring equitable access to global learning experiences across racial\, socioeconomic\, gender\, financial\, and other lines? How often are underrepresented groups of students brought into these experiences and encouraged to participate? What are models that work for all or many students?\n-How might the intersectionality of global learning\, service learning\, internships\, and other community-based high-impact practices (including ePortfolios) be leveraged to achieve greater impact and engagement to increase student success? What dimensions of these experiences should be considered essential for high-quality\, high-impact global learning?Bookmark

SUMMARY:2019 Institute on Teaching and Learning for Campus-wide Interfaith Excellence
DESCRIPTION:The ever-increasing diversity of the United States means that we regularly encounter religious difference in our everyday lives. American citizens have a choice of how to respond to this unprecedented diversity and difference in our communities and nation. Rather than allowing apathy or intolerance to define the future of our democracy\, we can choose to engage each other to build bridges across lines of difference. American colleges and universities have a special role and responsibility to help our fellow citizens explore how to embrace our many differences while maintaining a common life together. Higher education brings people together across lines of religious difference through curricular\, co-curricular\, and community engagement opportunities. As such\, campuses serve as both a laboratory for how diverse societies can thrive\, as well as a launching pad for the next generation of leaders who can transform experiences with diversity into engaged and productive pluralism. \nThe 2019 Institute on Teaching and Learning for Campus-wide Interfaith Excellence\, in tandem with AAC&U’s Institute on Integrative Learning and Signature Work\, will prepare college and university leaders to transform their campuses into model environments for interfaith cooperation. Informed by the Leadership Practices for Interfaith Excellence\, the Institute is an opportunity for campuses to develop context specific plans for integrating interfaith cooperation in sustainable and far-reaching ways in order to cultivate new generations of civic interfaith leaders. Over the course of this four-day Institute\, campus teams will meet with a faculty advisor\, attend sessions relevant to their campus project\, meet as a team to develop a context-specific action plan\, and consult with experts on pressing issues. \nThrough the generous support of the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations\, all costs will be covered for campus teams who attend the Institute. In addition\, each campus will be eligible for a $5\,000 grant to implement their action plan on campus. Campus teams will continue to receive guidance and mentorship from IFYC and AAC&U throughout the year. Representatives from each campus team will be asked to attend a gathering in spring 2020 to share and reflect on their interfaith action plans post-institute.Bookmark

SUMMARY:Summit for Leaders in Advancement
DESCRIPTION:As the advancement landscape shifts\, it becomes increasingly imperative for senior leaders to make strategic decisions\, drive innovation and cultivate a culture of excellence. \nHigher-education students and faculty are often on the vanguard of social movements\, not least because college is often the first time people from different backgrounds are brought into contact in meaningful and sustained ways. As the United States reckons with the legacy of slavery and segregation and the ongoing reality of racial injustice\, Europe grapples with ever-growing waves of immigration from Africa and the Middle East\, people with cultures and religions vastly different from those of once homogenous European societies. In this context\, it is important that higher education advancement leaders deepen their understanding of race\, culture and inclusion and their capacity to engage in challenging conversations across human differences. \nEarly Bird* by May 31\, 2019\n$1\,575\, Member\n$2\,100\, Nonmember\nRegular Conference Rate\n$1\,675\, Member\n$2\,200\, Nonmember\n*Early bird ends May 31\, 2019. SUMMARY:2019 Institute on High-Impact Practices and Student Success
DESCRIPTION:The 2019 Institute on High-Impact Practices and Student Success will help campus and state system teams advance student success by making quality and equity the foundations for excellence in undergraduate education. Teams will work with Institute faculty to articulate guided learning pathways that serve as catalysts to deepen connections between the assets students bring to college\, their educational experiences\, and preparation for lifelong success.\nDrawing on evidence-based research that demonstrates a positive relationship between student participation in high-impact practices (HIPs) and improved student outcomes\, teams will define and develop curricular and cocurricular practices to support student engagement\, advance curricular coherence\, and generate equitable outcomes. Utilizing AAC&U’s Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education (VALUE) rubrics as well as the newly established VALUE Institute\, participating teams will define and/or strengthen processes for directly assessing student achievement of learning outcomes as a result of participation in high-impact practices. These processes will help campus and system-level teams set and monitor progress towards equity goals to improve educational outcomes for all students.\nCampuses will examine efforts to implement educational change and bring effective practices to scale in a time of limited resources. The Institute program addresses ambitious goals for improving both completion rates and the quality of student learning\, and it is highly relevant for institutions at various stages of work.Bookmark
