Form Field Information - Academic Rank

The U.S. academic ranking system is listed but appears with a number next to it. If your nomenclature differs from this please use the numbers for reference, with 1 being the highest rank used at your institution.

Carnegie Classifications

Full details of the classification system and an institutional database can be found at http://carnegieclassifications.iu.edu/classification_descriptions/basic.php (opens in new browser tab). The following information is extracted from this site.

Doctoral Universities

Includes institutions that awarded at least 20 research/scholarship doctoral degrees during the update year and also institutions with below 20 research/scholarship doctoral degrees that awarded at least 30 professional practice doctoral degrees in at least 2 programs.

Master’s Colleges and Universities

Generally includes institutions that awarded at least 50 master’s degrees and fewer than 20 doctoral degrees during the update year.

Baccalaureate Colleges

Includes institutions where baccalaureate or higher degrees represent at least 50 percent of all degrees but where fewer than 50 master’s degrees or 20 doctoral degrees were awarded during the update year.

Baccalaureate/Associate’s Colleges

Includes four-year colleges (by virtue of having at least one baccalaureate degree program) that conferred more than 50 percent of degrees at the associate’s level .

Associate’s Colleges

Institutions at which the highest level degree awarded is an associate’s degree. The institutions are sorted into nine categories based on the intersection of two factors: disciplinary focus (transfer, career & technical or mixed) and dominant student type (traditional, nontraditional or mixed).

Special Focus Institutions

Institutions where a high concentration of degrees is in a single field or set of related fields.

Tribal Colleges

Colleges and universities that are members of the American Indian Higher Education Consortium, as identified in IPEDS Institutional Characteristics.

Form Field Information - Status

MentorMatch Status is used to determine how you wish to participate in the matching process. You may chose multiple options. Select;

  • Open to accepting a traditional mentee if you are interested in a one-on-one relationship where you are superior in experience, knowledge and perhaps rank to your potential mentee.
  • Actively seeking a traditional mentor if you are seeking a one-on-one relationship where you have less experience, knowledge, and perhaps a lower rank than your potential mentor.
  • Open to a peer one-on-one mentoring relationship if you are seeking a one-on-one relationship in which both participants bring strengths to the table that you can share.
  • Open to membership in a co-mentoring circle if you are seeking a many-to-many relationship that is defined by the circle owner. It may be peer based or have a mixture of aspirational and experienced members.
  • Accepting new members in my co-mentoring circle if your are a circle owner / manager and the circle is willing to expand its membership.
  • Not currently accepting new relationships (please uncheck all other options) if you are either not currently interested in a mentoring relationship or your have active relationships that meet your needs. This keeps your profile active but signals to other participants not to send you requests.

Form Field Information - Operational Level

Operational Level is based on administrative complexity. Select:

  • System – multi institutional if have experience within the central administration for a system of institutions. Examples would be the State University of New York, or Miami Dade Community College.
  • System member Institution- Single or multi-campus if you have experience in a member institution of a system. Some of these institutions may have multiple branch campuses of their own.
  • Standalone institution – Single or multi-campus if you have experience in a state institution that is not part of a system or in a private institution.
  • Institutional branch-campus if you have experience at a branch campus of either a system member or standalone institution.
Form Field Information - Operational Area

Operational Areas are broad classifications of functional areas within higher education institutions. The areas are based on the U.S. system so please chose the area that most closely fits with your experience.

Form Field Information - Institutional Rank

Institutional Ranks are job titles that are based on the U.S. system. Please chose the titles that most closely align with your appointments. For example, in the UK a Vice-Chancellor would select President and a Pro-Vice-Chancellor would select Dean.
